Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shift as nurse so she could pursue her love of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay instantly fell in love when she showed her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to promote activism. DuVernay developed a social aware by her mother. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma and decided to make an documentary on King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still in university. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury, and then look through their trash. After being disappointed in journalism by the tasks she was handed she decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
